Good news for smokers

This is good news for active smokers if they are willing to stop smoking.

If you have been smoking for decades , not too late if you want to stop the habit of smoking . Therefore , recent research suggests that the risk of death due to heart problems caused by smoking can be reduced in a time faster than previously believed .

The study, reported in the American Heart Association is researching smokers aged over 65 years who had smoked for 32 pack years . Determined from the number of pack years of cigarettes smoked per day by the number of years a person smokes .

In this study , researchers found that smokers who quit the habit can reduce the risk of heart failure , heart attack , and stroke equivalent to people who have never smoked , with half times faster than previous research .

" Whereas previous studies the risk of death from heart disease could be reduced after 15 years . , "  .

" Even for heavy smokers who smoked more than 32 pack years , they significantly reduce the risk of total mortality by 35 percent , so there is a positive message for everyone , " said Ahmed who is also professor of cardiovascular disease at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine .

Ahmed and his team collected data to analyze medical information from the Cardiovascular Health Study since 1989 . They compared 853 people who quit smoking for 15 years or less with 2,557 people who do not smoke .

" Although this study clearly seen death from heart disease could be reduced , lung damage is rather difficult to avoid , " said Ahmed .

Therefore , those who smoked less than 32 pack years and had quit smoking are still at high risk of dying from lung cancer , emphysema , or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease .
